It started off as a sightseeing walk in D.C. when he saw her sitting outside of a cafe, across the street from the embassy. She was waiting for him as they had agreed to meet here at this time and place. They had met through an online pen pal service called Global Pen Pals. She was British of course.
The day is sunny, but there is a slight chill in the air. As he approaches, she stands and says “Hello, I’m Emmie, I believe you were looking for me.” in more of a statement than a question.
They are walking down the street, as they do, they were having conversations. “So, I promise not to say” but before he could say anything a person comes up to them and says, “I love your accent”. To which he says “That” and smiles. This causes her to smile and say, “thank you”
“So, where do you work?” Emmie asks, with a grin. ” I work at The James R. Lilith Foundation. I am a Senior Researcher. I was assigned the Rocquem 13 paper, but I did not find much on it. So, I was given the 7 sisters instead. What about you? What do you do?” He said grinning back at her, never taking his eyes off of hers. “Well, I’m a nursing student for CHS, I work at Campus London. I am here on holiday with my mum and dad and also my little sister.
As they were walking, they came across a tea shop called Tea for Two. It was a quaint little shop with a warm atmosphere filled with the fragrance of brewing teas and pastries. “Do you drink tea?” she asked, smiling. “Yes, I do”, he said, opening the door for her. When they entered the shop, they were seated on a settee with a window view that overlooks the river.
As they were having tea, Emmies little sister approached them and said, “Mum and Dad are looking for you,” she said as she stared at the man her sister was not just talking to but gazing at as well. She must have found her pen pal after all, she thought this must be her boyfriend, she realized. Emmie finally noticed her little sister and said “this is my little sister, Victoria, we called her Vicky. He responded, “Hi Vicky, my name is Trevor, pleased to meet you”.
She realized that they never stopped looking into each others eyes, so she continues to speak. ” Mum says we are to meet them at the embassy” she says, then took the opportunity to pick with her older sister. “Mum also says you were adopted”, and at her saying that she finally realized her sister was there talking to her. At this point she turned to her sister, who was grinning and repeated her first statement. To this Emmie formally introduced him to her sister and said “We are going to meet our parents at the embassy, would you like to come with us? “With that she pinched her sister and underneath her breath, she mouthed “little Pratt, I am not” while never missing a beat. He replies, “I would love to meet your parents, as it was a pleasure to meet your little sister.”
They soon arrive at the embassy and as they enter the grounds her parents are shocked to see her with a young man in towed and her father asked her mum “how is it she left here alone and now comes back with a young man with her?”. To which her mum says “she told us she was going to me her friend from America, when we got here, remember? His name is Trevor; they have been writing to each other for months now”. She exclaimed with a sense of joy that her daughter might have found the right person after all. It took them months to finally connect and hours on the telephone and internet for them to at last meet, she thought. Well, she looks happy and so does he. She prays it works out between them and with God’s blessing she will have a son in law and grandchildren someday. With this she and her husband approached them and began formal introductions.
